Carpet & Rug

Accurate, Networked Moisture Sensors for Carpet and Rug Manufacturers

Throughout the manufacturing of all textiles, the measurement and control of moisture within the product is critical. That holds true for carpet and rug manufacturing operations as well. Moisture analysis must occur in many production phases of carpet and rugs to ensure a product that meets the necessary standards.

On the dye line, carpet must be dried to a rather low moisture content (typically less than 1%) to help control color variations. A high moisture level (over 3-4%) will adversely affect the later application of latex to the carpet backing. If the latex does not properly soak into the carpet, it will later cause fiber delamination from the backing mat and greatly reduce the lifespan and quality of the product. On the other hand, a carpet that’s dried too much will cause the latex to sit on the surface of the carpet and not be absorbed, leading to similar problems for a much different reason.

Critical Measurements

Measuring moisture is critical at the latex application phase of the carpet manufacturing process as well.

Measure in Real Time

Both the amount of latex applied and the dried latex condition can be measured on line in real time using Finna Sensors near infrared (NIR) sensors. Latex is an incredibly expensive part of the process and therefore must be utilized with maximum efficiency possible. Too much latex applied means product wasted and can easily amount to thousands of dollars per day. Not only is this a waste, but a later drying operation may suffer reduced efficiency as a result, leading to latex transfer to carpet pile during rewind and loss of fibers after installation and vacuuming.

Finished carpet drying with moisture levels typically in the 1-3% range must be carefully measured at the coater stage of manufacturing in order to control shrinkage, fiber retention, and other quality considerations that are vital to your reputation and your bottom line.

Finna Sensors has long been a prime supplier of on line, instantaneous near infrared (NIR) moisture meters to the carpet industry, and we’re ready to help you create a more networked, efficient future.
