MC PRO 2400 HDNC: Transverse HD Planer Meter

High-Definition Moisture Grading

Maximize grade recovery with Finna’s highly accurate HD transverse planer meter. The most widely-adopted transverse sensor system easily integrates with auto graders and can also be used for wet board drop out. Integration via ProTrac software, with automatic barcode or manual tracking, provides advanced kiln analysis and drying reports.

Finna’s next generation transverse planer system, also known as the MC Pro 2400 HDNC, offers an accurate, low-maintenance and highly-durable moisture measurement platform. System can directly integrate with transverse auto graders to optimize grade recovery and/or drop out wet boards for further drying. The standard software package includes multiple moisture content visualizations, planer run histograms, diagnostics, alerts, alarms, and more. The ProTrac software option provides historical run reporting, kiln mapping and end-to-end integration with our other moisture systems (in-kiln and sawmill/green lumber sorting).

Key Features, Advantages and Benefits

The system was developed to offer higher accuracy, better yield and increased profit. Additionally, through design innovations, this newest solution has lower cost of ownership and easier startup and training. The following chart highlights some of the key features:

FeatureAdvantage
Up to 24 sensors availableIncreased surface area measurement and resolution to optimize value added processing like trimming, cut-in-two, etc.
Three sensor sizesWith 7", 16" and 22" sensors, full configurability is available to maximize value
Remote upgradesCan upgrade both Windows software and firmware via the cloud
Ethernet IPModern and scalable data architecture and communication
Software and ReportingWhether you’re looking for trends or anomalies, the configurable software and reporting yield the data you need, when you need it
Diagnostics, Alerts, and AlarmsDetermine root-cause and corrective action quickly, reducing costly downtime and enhancing operational excellence
High-speed compensationUsing distance and temperature sensors, moisture content is made more accurate through compensation up to 260 lpm
Air blastsAutomatically clean distance and temperature sensors to ensure proper measurement

How we developed the world’s most advanced moisture grading system

At the onset of the development of the Transverse HDNC Planer Meter, Finna Sensors embarked on a new path. Rather than just improve the existing system, Finna Sensors started from scratch to re-imagine the product to make it a more robust, effective and easy to use system. In particular, the engineering team started with the following concepts to guide their efforts:

1. Grading is made more effective by increasing the measurement points

Previous generations of the planer moisture system were limited by either a full contact system, or just five non-contact sensors measuring each board. The HDNC system can now measure with up to 24 non-contact sensors.

2. The system must take advantage of rapid innovation

Finna Sensors has implemented a rigorous program called, Persistent Innovative Development, to drive continuous investment in new products and services. The company does not want its customers to be bound by 7 year+ product cycles. Therefore, tools are provided so that any system can be upgraded via the cloud to deliver new features and enhancements.

3. Data drives success

Today’s manufacturing environment demands ever-increasing data. To accomplish this, Finna Sensors adds internal diagnostic checks and passes the results to plant computer systems. Users can set limits to trigger alarms to warn of potential sensor performance issues. All of this provides invaluable Internet of Things (IOT) data for the manufacturer.

Useful Resources

Improved moisture control has emerged as an important process improvement element in the forest products industry, as mills continue to focus on profitability and yield. Finna Sensors provides the industry’s widest-used end-to-end line of integrated moisture measurement systems and related process optimization tools for the sawmill, kiln and planer.
